Nestlé is committed to long-term and purposeful sustainability work. The ambition is to reduce the use of newly produced plastic by 33% by 2025 and to ensure that all packaging globally is fully reusable or recyclable by the same year.
As a further step towards this goal, completely plastic-free lids are available for coffee mugs and takeaway cups. These lids are designed to meet both functional requirements and high sustainability standards – without compromising the user experience.
The lids are made from bagasse, a natural fibre material extracted from sugar cane or bamboo waste products after the liquid has been pressed out. The material is particularly well suited for hot drinks, retains its shape when wet and can withstand high temperatures without being affected.
Properties:
Made from 100% renewable raw materials
Can be recycled as paper packaging
Temperature resistant, even for beverages over 100 °C
Lids for coffee cups play a crucial role in serving hot drinks for takeaway. Whether it's coffee lids, mug lids, drink lids, takeaway lids, disposable lids or lids for hot drinks, function, fit and choice of material are key factors for both consumers and businesses. These lids are used in conjunction with paper cups, disposable cups, takeaway cups, disposable coffee cups, cardboard beverage containers, or mugs for to-go service. The combination of the right cup and the right lid ensures spill-free transport, maintained temperature and a comfortable drinking experience – especially when serving coffee, tea, hot chocolate or other hot beverages.
Modern lids for paper cups are available in several designs, for example:
Drink lids with spouts or openings for direct consumption
Lids with steam control valves
Flat lids, dome lids or high lids depending on the area of use
Universal lids adapted for several cup sizes
Traditionally, many lids for disposable cups have been made of plastic, but with increasing environmental requirements and sustainability goals, alternative solutions are now in demand. Plastic-free lids, fibre lids and lids based on plant fibres – such as bagasse lids – are therefore becoming an increasingly common choice in cafés, restaurants, petrol stations, offices and event catering.
Bagasse-based lids offer several advantages:
They are made from agricultural waste material
They are bio-based and fossil-free
They work excellently with paper cups for hot drinks
They can be handled within existing recycling systems for paper packaging
Together with cardboard cups, fibre cups, eco-friendly cups, sustainable takeaway cups or disposable paper cups, plastic-free lids are an important step towards more circular and responsible serving solutions. In summary, choosing the right lid for a coffee mug or takeaway cup is not just a question of function and comfort, but also of environmental responsibility, material innovation and future-proof serving.
